Krasnov announced assets and real estate seized abroad for $500 million

Abroad, at the request of the Russian Federation, assets and real estate worth $ 500 million were arrested, Russian Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov said on September 23 at the 20th meeting of the prosecutors general of the member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

For what purposes can the confiscated funds be spent?

“The Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation ensures and controls the preservation by the competent authorities of foreign states of arrest on more than 60 real estate objects, as well as financial assets in the amount equivalent to half a billion US dollars,” he said, speaking in Astana.

He noted that as a result of interaction with the Swiss federal justice department, more than $3.5 million was returned to the Russian Federation, which had previously been stolen from one of the Russian car-building enterprises.

Krasnov also clarified that anti-criminal cooperation with countries is complicated due to the unconstructive position of some states and the creation of artificial problems, which, in turn, prevents the return of assets withdrawn from Russia.

In addition, he drew attention to the fact that, at the initiative of the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office, an interdepartmental working group was organized to return assets from abroad. According to him, a draft law has been developed that provides for the transfer of authority to the department to apply to the jurisdictions of other countries for the execution of court decisions in terms of compensation for harm. The project is under approval.

On March 15, the head of Crimea, Sergei Aksyonov, warned that Crimea could seize the property of Ukrainian citizens destabilizing the situation.

On April 8, the State Council of the Republic submitted to the State Duma a draft on the nationalization of property and assets that, as of February 24, 2022, belonged to countries unfriendly to Russia or their citizens. On April 21, the Council for the Codification and Improvement of Civil Legislation under the President of Russia did not support the relevant bill.
