A toddler has completely severed his right thumb in a horror incident on an escalator at a shopping center.

Louis Fairchild was on his way to an escalator at the Broadway mall with his mother Anora on Saturday when the accident occurred.

The boy was holding the rail of the escalator when a sharp piece of metal sticking out from under the railing reportedly cut his thumb.

“Lewis cried and he held out his hand and it was bloody,” recalls Louis’ devastated mother 7NEWS

Anora said the piece of metal “pulled out its tendons” and “went through the bone.”

She added that her boy’s thumb was practically “chopped off.”

Louis was rushed to Sydney Children’s Hospital and operated on by doctors. According to his mother, the procedure took several hours.

Medical personnel were unable to save the toddler’s thumb.

Louis is currently recovering from the ordeal at home, with further surgical procedures a possibility.

“My family has suffered an unspeakable amount of heartache. Lewis will probably live the rest of his life without using his right thumb,” she said.

“We never imagined that a short trip to our local shopping center would be our worst nightmare from which we can’t wake up.”

Broadway shopping center management is investigating the incident.

Lawyers from the center are in talks with the family’s lawyer.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Broadway Sydney for comment.
